Mattox Earns All-American Honors at NCAA Championships

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Alexis Mattox of the Carthage women's track team competed in the hammer throw during the final day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Saturday afternoon. It was a special day for Mattox, who came away with a seventh place finish and her first All-American recognition.

How it Happened

After fouling on her opening throw, Mattox entered the top eight on her second attempt with a mark of 54.14m. Her final throw of prelims registered at 54.01m. Mattox finished the flight in eighth place and advanced to the finals.

In finals, Mattox opened with a throw of 53.84m before unleashing a mark of 55.20m to jump ahead of Wis-Eau Claire's Kayla Behnke and into seventh place. Her final throw would register at 54.26m, keeping Mattox in seventh place and securing All-American honors.

Coach's Remarks

"We really had an amazing week filled with many lifetime memories," said Head Coach Stephanie Domin. "Mikayla, just a junior, had her first taste of the NCAA meet and competed well. I am excited to see her return next year and excel even further after this experience. Aubrey, Lex , Alyssa had a special senior year capping it off at the NCAA meet. They all had great performances and competed with experience. We will certainly miss their hard work, dedication and leadership they brought to the team.  They are all about to show the world their many talents and we cannot wait to see the path they take."

"I couldn't be more excited for Lex and how she competed today," added Assistant Coach Greg Raimondi. "It was awesome to see her calm and collected throughout the whole competition. Even though she opened up with a first round foul she stepped into the ring each round ready to compete. She put together an amazing series of throws and moved up a spot in finals to claim her first All-American honor.  This was an amazing end to her senior year  and I couldn't be more proud of her.  I've said it a bunch but it's more important that I got to witness the growth of the athletes in these moments because that is what is going to help them outside of the sport. Lex is definitely one that has learned from her previous nationals experiences and developed the ability to keep calm under pressure, face adversity, and be confident even when things aren't going well."
