Schoeneman Earns All-American Honors at NCAA Outdoor National Championships

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Alyssa Gulsvig, Aubrey Schoeneman, and Mikayla Wright represented the Carthage women's track team in shot put during the second day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Friday afternoon. It was a strong day for the Firebirds, as Schoeneman came away with a fourth place finish and All-American honors.

How it Happened

Schoeneman opened the day with a throw of 14.64m, placing second and advancing her into finals despite fouling on the final two attempts of prelims. In finals, Schoeneman threw 14.30m and 14.33m on her fourth and fifth attempts. She still held on to second place heading into the final round of throws, before Alexis Boykin (MIT) and Molly Laumakis (UChicago) jumped past Schoeneman and Jane Fahy (Utica) to finish first and second. Schoeneman's final throw of 14.54m secured a fourth place finish and All-American honors.

Gulsvig opened Flight 1 with a mark of 12.66m. She improved on her second throw of the day with a mark of 13.00m, before finishing off the flight with a throw of 13.35m, which earned a 17th place in the event.

Wright opened the event with a throw of 12.65m. Her second throw, her farthest of the contest, traveled 12.99m. Wright finished off the flight with a mark of 12.07m and finished in 19th place.

Coach's Remarks

"The day started off special before the competition even began," mentioned assistant coach Greg Raimondi. "Having three women at the national meet in one event is a huge accomplishment and shows how hard these women have worked this year.

This was the first outdoor national meet for Alyssa and Mikayla, and I thought they represented themselves and our program well.

Mikayla had a very strong last two weeks of the season to secure a spot at a final qualifier. While the results weren't what we were hoping for, I am excited she got the opportunity as she heads into her senior year next season.

Alyssa had another solid day, and I think she just needed one more round to find her groove. She continued to climb each round and acted like she deserved to be there. She leaves Carthage as a three-time national qualifier and puts herself in three of our top 10 record books. Super proud of the person and thrower she has grown into.

Aubrey had a fantastic day; she came out strong on her opening throw and had a consistent series to finish in 4th behind a tough field. She caps off her senior season as the school record holder, 17th furthest throw in D3 history, and now a two-time All-American in the shot. Aubrey has grown so much over the past four years, and I'm excited to see her continue that growth as she heads to Kent State next year to use her final year of eligibility."
