DES MOINES, Iowa. - The Carthage women's track & field team was represented at the 2024 Drake Relays by seniors
Alexis Mattox and
Aubrey Schoeneman. The Drake Relays, hosted by Drake University, are considered to be one of the top track & field events in the United States each year.
Schoeneman placed 10th in shot put with a mark of 13.63m. She also finished 14th in discus with a mark of 43.26m.
Mattox placed ninth in the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 56.28m, which is the second farthest throw in Carthage program history.
"I thought we had a really good weekend and the athletes competed well for their first time at the Drake Relays," said Assistant Coach
Greg Raimondi. "They did a fantastic job representing Carthage and D3 schools at a meet that included some of the top athletes across all divisions. Aubrey [Schoeneman] started off the weekend for the women with a season best in the discus moving up to 27th in the NCAA. An hour later she came back and threw 13.63m in the shot, nearly missing finals placing 10th. Alexis [Mattox] had a great meet with the best series of her career. She hit a nearly 2m PR to move up to 4th in the NCAA with a throw of 56.26m to finish 9th.  She continues to close the gap toward our school record as she sits #2 All-Time in Carthage history. I am really proud of how they competed this weekend and am sure this experience will help them be stronger competitors as we head into championship season time."
The Firebirds will return to action on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 as Carthage is set to compete at the CCIW Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Rock Island, Ill. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
