Firebirds Lead Field After First Day of CCIW Championships

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Carthage women's track & field team competed in the opening day of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Indoor Track & Field Championships at North Central College. It was a stellar day for the Firebirds, earning a pair of individual champions and sitting at the top of the team scoreboard heading into the final day.

Who Led the Way

The Firebirds earned the podium sweep in the weight throw. Alexis Mattox won her first CCIW weight throw title with a mark of 18.45m, marking the first win in the event for the Firebirds since 2020. Aubrey Schoeneman placed second at 17.08m, with Nicole Tarpley placing third at 16.07m. Madison Payne placed sixth at 15.16m. The Firebirds tallied 27 points in the event.

Anna Kegel won the long jump with a mark of 5.52m, marking the first win in the event for Carthage since 2013. Christina Hall placed third with a mark of 5.40m.

Teagan Johnston placed seventh in the pentathlon with 2,546 points. Her top scoring event was the 60m hurdles, where she scored 592 points.

The distance medley relay team, which featured Kylie Florance, Sarah Kerfin, Lili Bednarek, and Kylie Smith, placed fifth in 13:02.61.

Kegel qualified for finals in the 60m dash with a time of 7.95 seconds.

Abbey Calhoun placed eighth in the pole vault after clearing a mark of 3.16m.

Coach's Remarks

"We are off to a great start after day one," said Head Coach Stephanie Domin. "I am proud of how the team competed today ! Huge congrats to Lex [Mattox] on winning the weight throw and Anna [Kegel] on her monster long jump mark to win the event. We brought the energy and are looking forward to day two."

Women's track & field is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 24 as the team looks to continue the momentum at the final day of the CCIW Indoor Track & Field Championships.
