Firebirds Secure Victory at Forever Red Alumni Classic

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage men's track & field team opened the 2023-24 season on Saturday, hosting the Forever Red Alumni Classic in the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center (TARC). It was a special day for the Firebirds as the team honored senior Joseph White in a pre-meet ceremony and celebrated his NCAA Division III Indoor National Championship wins in both shot put and weight throw. The track & field program also welcomed back former members of the program for Alumni Day, with many competing in the events throughout the day. As a team, the Firebirds cruised to victory in the season opener and won their first meet of the season.

The Firebirds won the meet with 174 points. Parkside placed second with 82 points. Wheaton (Ill.) placed third with 70 points, while Lake Forest placed fourth with 36 points. Carthage Alumni tallied 30 points in their return to the TARC.

Mac Anderson won the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.52 seconds. Dylan Parker placed sixth with a time of 6.73.

Jaylan Nelson won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.44 seconds. Reece Greenwald finished fourth with a time of 23.85, while Marius Davis placed fifth in 23.89.

Alek Zavadoski won the 400-meter final with a time of 53.17 seconds. Ethan Meyer took third in 55.46.

Michael Barber brought home the victory in the mile, finishing in 4:35.61. Connor Wood placed sixth in 4:55.40.

Chase Upmann won the 3,000 meter race with a time of 8:51.41. Ethan Walker took third in 8:59.87. Micah Anderson took fourth, with Topher Davis in fifth and Charles Fitts in sixth.

White brought home the victory in shot put with a throw of 17.54 meters. Lucas Leal placed fourth at 13.03 meters. Jordan Hughes placed fifth, while Jacob Brost took sixth.

White also won the weight throw, coming close to his national record with a throw of 21.34 meters. Leal took second with a throw of 17.88 meters. Brost took fourth at 16.32 meters, while Renz Lies took sixth.

Estrada placed second in high jump, clearing 1.80 meters. Nelson placed third with a mark of 1.70 meters.

Collin Moran placed second in triple jump with a 12.16 performance.

Adam Kedzior placed third in the 55m hurdles with a 8.44 second performance. Kendrick Johnson III placed fourth in 8.86.

The 4x400m relay team, which featured Kedzior, Ben Jensen, Joe Balas, and Justin Gatunzi placed third in 3:34.77. The second relay squad of Dylan Parker, Sebastian Estrada, Zebulon Turner, and Cody Kazupski placed fourth in 3:35.97.

Johnson III placed third in long jump with a mark of 6.43 meters. Luke Holtmeier placed fifth at 6.22 meters.

Estrada and Aidan O'Neill tied for fourth place in the pole vault, clearing 3.25 meters

Ben Ewald placed sixth in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:05.41.

The Firebirds season continues on Saturday, Dec. 9 as the team heads to Wis.-Oshkosh to compete in the Early Bird Invitational. Track & Field returns to the TARC on Jan. 13 as the Firebirds host the Firebird First Invitational. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
