Leal Earns Second Team All-American Honors in the Hammer Throw at NCAA Championships

GENEVA - Lucas Leal of the Carthage men's track & field team competed in the hammer throw at the 2025 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon. Leal registered a strong opening throw, which was enough for the graduate student from Bartlett, Ill. to secure Second Team All-American honors.

Leal opened the day in Flight no. 2 and started with a mark of 58.40 meters, placing him in seventh place in the field of 22 competitors at the time of the throw. Leal then scratched his second throw and slid to eighth place at the end of the second round of the flight. Leal's day came to an end as he scratched his third and final throw of the flight, coming up short of qualifying for finals with a 12th place finish.

"Today was a little disappointing because I know Lucas was ready for a bigger mark," expressed Assistant Coach Greg Raimondi. "We have been working toward the school record all year and his last two weeks of practice looked really strong. You had to be at the top of your game to be an all American and sadly his best today just missed him getting into the final. This was one of the toughest hammer competitions in D3 history and to nearly miss the final on an off day highlights what I think he was ready for. He leaves our throws program in a better spot over his tenure. He is a 4x national qualifier, 1x All-American, and claims the no. 2 spots on our all time top 10 lists for hammer and weight."
