Men’s Track & Field Start Strong at CCIW Championships

5/6/2022 11:52:00 PM

WHEATON, Ill. — The Carthage men's track and field team opened with an impressive first day at the 2022 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships at McCully Stadium in Wheaton, Ill.

Head Coach Josh Henry:

"I don't know if today could have gone much better. Our focus for these championships is to just go out and compete our hardest while trusting the body of work that we have put in over the course of the year.  We did just that today, and the results show.

The only two finals of the day were in the 3K Steeple Chase and the 10,000 meters.  We placed in both with top 10 program performances with Cam's 9:38 in the steeple and Walker's 32:05 in the 10K.  We also saw a top 10 program performance in the 800m with a monster run from Chase in prelims.  Craig also advanced to the 800m finals on time, which is huge for us.

Cody also provided two crucial performances for us in the 200m and 400m and they were both enough to advance to tomorrow's final round.  He is a guy who looks to be coming around at the right time for us and that is such a boost for us.

In the decathlon, Adam had a great first day and he is currently sitting in second place.  We feel the day two events are his strength, so I am excited to see if he can close the gap on first place enough to give him a chance when the gun goes off for the 1500m.

Tomorrow is the bulk of the championship but we have put ourselves in position to have a great meet.  We just need to come back with the same level of intensity and confidence that we saw today.  We can't wait to get back out there."

Highlights:

  • Freshman Chase Upmann finished first in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:54.29, taking second place in the Carthage record book for the event. His previous best was 1:54.92 at the UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative on April 29th, 2022.
  • Sophomore Cody Canegan posted a 50.34 in the 400 meter dash to qualify for the final round tomorrow. Canegan ran a 22.37 in the 200 meter dash as well to finish in fourth place.
  • Freshman Cameron Fischer ran 9:38.10 in the 3000 meter steeplechase to place third, improving on his old 9:54.66 personal best set in April.
