Firebirds Take Third Among 20 Teams at Wisconsin Lutheran

4/14/2022 9:08:00 PM

MILWAUKEE — The Carthage men's track and field team continued their hot start to the outdoor track and field season, placing third in the 20-team field on Thursday at the Warrior Invitational.

Competing in just their second meet of the outdoor season due to weather, the Firebirds posted a handful of personal bests. The team looks to continue their season next weekend at the Don Church Invitational on Saturday, April 23.

Head Coach Josh Henry

"The weather today was certainly a factor with significant winds from start to finish. However, I thought we competed well as a team with more emphasis on place and technique rather than chasing marks. In a few instances, I think we surprised ourselves with some quality marks despite the conditions."

"In the throws, Joseph had a very strong day putting up nationally competitive marks in the shot and discus. His mark of 17.01 meters in shot narrowly missed the outdoor school record and his mark of 49.22 meters in discus was just under his personal best, which qualified him for the NCAA Championships last year."

"In the sprints we saw some very nice runs in the 200 from Cody, Alonzo, and Mac. In the 400 Joe ran a super impressive race, winning the meet from the second heat. We also had some nice hurdle races with Al running a lifetime best in the 110's, Adam running a very respectable 110 debut, and Adam running an impressive 400 in his hurdle debut. To close the meet, our 4x400 meter relay ran the best it has in 2022 with strong legs from Cody, Chase, Joe, and Adam."

"In the distance events, we had a strong showing in the 1500, led by a Cameron Fischer PR. Craig ran a really nice 800, winning the meet and officially cracking the 2:00 barrier for the first time. Topher ran a really nice 5K debut as well. Overall, I'm really happy with the steps we've taken in the last four days and am excited to see what we can accomplish next week, hopefully with a little more cooperation from Mother Nature."
