Firebirds Post Final Indoor Marks Before National Meet

3/5/2022 7:14:00 PM

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage men's track and field team finished up their indoor regular season schedule on Saturday, competing at the Ripon Final NCAA Qualifier and the Wartburg NCAA Qualifier.

"We had a very solid meet at Wartburg," said head coach Josh Henry. "The DMR ran great last night, just narrowly missing the school record. To consider where we were coming into the season, it's awesome to see the combo of Chase, Cody, Barber, and Cam coming that close to breaking the record."

At Ripon, Alex Jarvis nearly posted a mark just over 14 meters, but faulted, narrowly missing out on nationals.

"Alex jumping on back-to-back days is tough, but we wanted to give him every chance to improve upon his mark for nationals," said Henry. "He didn't pop one this weekend but we're excited to see what he will do this spring during the outdoor season."

At Wartburg, Craig Hundley ran a time of 4:11.99 in the mile, which increased his national ranking, after his 4:10.59 time on February 18 was converted to 4:13.

"Today, the main event for us was Craigs mile," said Henry. "He ran strong, moving his national rank up to roughly 30th. He will have a shot to get in tomorrow based on how entries fall. Regardless of what happens, he's had an incredible season."

Chase Upmann and Michael Barber ran solid times in the 800, while Cody Canegan posted a time of 51.09 in the 400.

"The DMR guys all doubled back today in a pretty short turnaround," said Henry. "Barber and Chase ran strong 800's and Cam snuck out a very small mile PR. Cody ran a solid 400. In the 5K, the challenging 5k and 3k conference double seemed to have caught up to Micah. He raced 65 laps in the last week so that isn't all that surprising. Still an incredible season for him with some big steps taken."

The team now waits to find out who qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships next weekend, which will take place in Winston-Salem, N.C.

"I'm looking forward to NCCA's next week," said Henry. "It's awesome to be going into the meet with Joseph leading the country in the weight. It appears Matt is safe and we'll cross our fingers for Craig. It's been a great season and we're not done yet."
