Firebirds Continue to Rewrite Record Book

2/4/2022 8:22:00 PM

KENOSHA, Wis. — Breaking a school record, and placing two marks in the program's top-10 list, the Carthage men's track and field team posted a successful day of results at the annual Tadd Metzger Invitational on Friday in the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center. Compiling 238 points, the Firebirds took first place among the five-team field.

Adam Kedzior will complete the heptathlon tomorrow, but the rest of the Carthage team now looks ahead to next Saturday, February 12, when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Head Coach Josh Henry

"Another great meet from our guys today. I think what made today's results all the more impressive was the fact that this was a smaller field, and getting off the banked track last week didn't slow us down a bit. The energy with this group has been amazing this year and it's been a lot of fun to be a part of."

"The biggest highlight of the day came out of the distance crew with Chase Upmann breaking a 22 year old school record in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:30.94. The record was previously held by Eric Pennington who was a very accomplished runner during his time at Carthage. What makes Chase's record truly special in my mind is the journey this guy has been on to get here. He is an incredibly hard worker and someone who is proof that truly believing in yourself can take you to heights you may not have considered possible just a few years ago. He is someone that is easy to root for and we are incredibly proud of his accomplishment today. Additionally out of the distance group we had some exceptional mile and 3K races. Craig's time of 4:18.29 in the mile is third best in program history, and Micah's time of 8:53.86 in the 3K just narrowly missed cracking into the top 10."

"Joseph led the way yet again in the throws this week with a monster mark in the shot put of 17.05 meters. This is back-to-back weeks with big PRs in the event for him and it currently moves him to second nationally and second in school history. Renz also had a nice day today throwing personal bests in both the shot and weight."

"Sprints were led today by a pair of nice 55 meter races from Mac and Tre who virtually tied each other in both prelims and finals. Mac also came back and ran a very nice debut in the 200 with a time of 23.51."

"Jumps were led once again today by Alex Javis. However, this week he excelled in the long, marking a 6.67 meter jump. Adam Kedzior also had a very nice jump during day one of the heptathlon, marking a 6.39 meter jump."

"Speaking of the heptathlon, Adam is having a great debut. He went four for four today with personal bests in the 55, long jump, high jump, and shot. He is sitting in a good spot going into day two, and he'll have a chance to push for top three if he vaults and hurdles well."
