2/25/2022 7:43:00 PM

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage men's track and field team sits in great position after the first day of the 2022 CCIW Indoor Track and Field Championships, scoring 34 points to claim third place on Friday at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center. The Firebirds were led by Joseph White, who took home the individual crown in the weight throw.

Carthage will be back up in Tarble tomorrow, February 26, as the second and final day begins at 10:45 a.m.

Head Coach Josh Henry

"We got off to a pretty strong start today. Joseph winning the weight throw was huge for us considering the competition he was facing. We also put up strong performances in the 5k with Micah and Ethan placing 4th and 5th. The DMR also ran really well to finish 3rd. The bulk of the meet is tomorrow, so there still are a lot of points on the table and it really is anyone's meet at this point."

Highlights

  • On his fifth attempt, Joseph White tossed a mark of 18.46 meters in the weight throw to overtake first place, winning his first conference championship of his collegiate career.
  • White's first-place finish is the sixth individual conference title for the Carthage program in the weight throw in the past decade.
  • Matthew Ausse added four points by placing fifth in the weight throw, while sophomore Lucas Leal added two more with a seventh-place finish.
  • With a jump of 6.48 meters in the long jump, Alex Jarvis took sixth place to score for the Firebirds.
  • On the track, Carthage scored nine points in the 5K, as Micah Anderson placed fourth with a time of 15:24.91, and Ethan Walker crossed the finish line just behind him in fifth with a time of 15:25.34 to set a new PR.
  • The Carthage DMR team of Chase Upmann, Joseph Balas, Michael Barber, and Cameron Fischer took third place to close out the evening, finishing with a time of 10:21.37, the third-fastest time in program history.
  • Adam Kedzior sits in fourth place overall through four of seven events in the heptathlon, taking third in the 55-meter dash, winning the long jump, taking 11th in the shot put, and taking fifth in the high jump.
