Men’s Track and Field School Record Goes Down for Second-Straight Week

2/12/2022 9:45:00 PM

WHITEWATER, Wis. — Yet another school record went down this week and more top-10 marks were set, as the Carthage men's track and field team competed at the Midwest Elite Invitational on Saturday in the Kachel Fieldhouse on the campus of UW-Whitewater. The Firebirds posted four top-10 marks today, highlighted by Joseph White's new school record in the weight throw. Carthage accumulated 37 points to take seventh place among the nine-team field.

The Firebirds will compete once more before the conference championships, traveling to UW-Oshkosh next Saturday, February 19.

Head Coach Josh Henry

"We had the opportunity today to compete with some of the  best programs in Division III and the guys definitely rose to the occasion. The biggest highlight of the day, among many, was Joseph's school record throw in the weight today. He has been on an absolute tear this season and it has been special to watch. His mark of 19.43 meters smashes the school record set in 2014 by three-time All-American, Derrick Guyette. He also came back later in the day to win the shot put by over a meter against some strong competition."

"In the distance events, Craig very narrowly missed setting a school record in the 3,000m, running an impressive 8:34.19. That mark is second in school history and is the second strong performance from him in as many weeks. I am excited to see what he can accomplish over the next month. In the mile, Chase ran a big PR of 4:22.90 and came back to anchor the 4x400 in a 51.5. His mark in the mile ranks 10th all-time in program history. Also in the mile, Cam ran an outstanding race, especially considering he took a nasty fall going into the bell lap. In the 5,000m, Micah and Ethan both ran very strong PRs and Micah's time of 15:22.82 places him 6th in program history."

"In the sprint events, Cody had a big day, which is encouraging to see two weeks out from the conference meet. His time of 50.55 in the 400m was nearly an indoor PR and his mark of 22.98 in 200m was an indoor PR. Tre' also had a nice showing in the 200m with his time of 23.37."

"In the jumps we saw a nice debut from Noel Wright in the long jump with his mark of 6.22 meters. Being it's been a few years since he's had an opportunity to jump, it's a strong starting point. In the triple, Jarvis had another strong showing in a competitive field. While his mark of 13.74 meters is a little short of his best, the consistency in quality jumps shows he's ready for a big one."

"Next week we will take a reduced squad to Oshkosh for those who need one last primer before the conference meet while some others will get a much deserved rest week."

Highlights

  • After breaking the 1,000-meter run school record last week, Chase Upmann ran the 10th-quickest mile today with a time of 4:22.90.
  • Micah Anderson's PR in the 5K today of 15:22.82 ranks as the sixth-fastest time in Carthage history.
  • Cody Canegan ran a season-best in the 400 today, crossing the finish line in 50.55 seconds and taking seventh place overall.
  • Aidan Lodwig led Carthage in the 800 today, setting a new PR with a time of 2:07.27.
  • Canegan returned to the track and set an indoor career-best in the 200-meter dash today, placing fourth overall with a time of 22.98 seconds.
  • Craig Hundley II crushed his PR in the 3K today with a time of 8:34.19, just under one second of setting a new program record, ranking as the second-fastest time in the event in Carthage history.
  • In a competitive field, Alex Jarvis placed sixth in the triple jump, after clearing 13.74 meters on his sixth and final attempt.
  • Joseph White began the day with a ludicrous throw in the weight throw, breaking the school record on a toss of 19.43 meters on his fifth attempt. White's mark topped Derrick Guyette's throw of 18.91 meters at the 2014 NCAA Indoor National Championships, and now places White second in the nation.
  • White would win the shot put as well with a throw of 16.45 meters. This was the 10th first-place finish for the Kenosha, Wis. native this season, and fourth consecutive meet in which White won both throwing events.
