NAPERVILLE, Ill. — In their first off-campus meet of the season, the men's track and field team competed in the Snow Day Invitational on the campus of North Central College on Friday. Posting over 100 points on the day, the Firebirds came in third behind North Central in first and Trine in second.
Carthage will compete in the Aurora Grand Prix next on Saturday, January 29.
"I felt we took a positive step today but am leaving the meet feeling like we still have so much room to improve. We are still missing some key guys in important areas and if we can manage to put it all together, I think this will be a special season for us. In the sprints today I thought we looked a little tired on the short week with a Friday meet. However, I still felt Tre ran a really nice 200m (23.46) and Adam ran a nice PR (23.72). We should benefit with a planned down week in training next week."
"In the jumps the highlight was also Adam, who vaulted for the first time in college after overcoming a soccer injury from his freshman year. Clearing 4.11m was exciting and admittedly a little unexpected."
"In the distance events we had a pretty balanced attack with a nice 5K from Micah, a strong trio in the 3K, and a couple of nice PRs in the mile. In the 800m, Chase ran a very gritty race for being boxed in and seemingly out of contention. He closed very strong to get second and crack the two minute barrier. He has a lot more in the tank if he catches a clean race. He also anchored the 4x400m relay with an impressive 52.10 split."
"The throws produced 50.5 points for us today and was highlighted by two big PRs in the shot from Joseph and Alex. Alex is a guy who we've seen some great throws from in practice, so it's nice to see him connect on one in a meet and break the 15m barrier."
