ROCK ISLAND, ILL.—The second CCIW contest of 2019 pitted the Carthage College men's lacrosse team on the road at Augustana College for a Saturday-afternoon affair. The Red Men jumped to a 13-0 lead after three quarters and didn't surrender their first goal of the contest until the fourth frame, where they hung onto a 17-5 victory over the Vikings.
Andy Szun returned to his scoring ways as he led the Red Men with three goals and four assists for seven points.
Noah Lindner netted a game-high five goals and 12 shots, while
Brody Ilstrup and
Danny Rossi each registered a pair of goals for the Red Men.
Carthage displayed promise in the face-off circle, and
Griffin Cleary had a lot to do with that as he mustered a 17-of-25 mark, leading to a game-high 10 ground balls.
Colin Poitras, who netted one goal and three assists, led all non-faceoff players with six ground balls. The Carthage defense was all
Liam O'Connor, who registered a pair of caused turnovers and helped his team achieve a total of eight.
The Red Men received contributions from all three goalies, where
Sam Kotsonas got the start and victory with five saves over 38:36 of work.
Zerik Rodriguez accumulated two saves over 8:25 of action, while
Kyle Guthrie stopped two shots in 12:59 of playing time. Augustana goalie Tommy Angelos made eight saves over the opening 45:00 before he turned things to Cameron Duffy for the final 15:00, who notched four saves. Carthage outshot Augustana 55-28.
The Red Men improve to 10-3, 1-1 CCIW while Augustana falls to 6-7, 1-1 CCIW.
Red Men 17, Augustana 5
Carthage touched Augustana for 29 first-half shots, which resulted in five goals in each the first and second quarters en route to a 10-0 halftime lead. Much of that was due to Carthage's success in the center circle as they allowed just three Augustana face-off victories over the first half.
Noah Lindner had a hand in all three third-quarter goals, where the Red Men took a 13-0 lead into the final 15:00. The Vikings triggered 13 shots in the fourth quarter, which almost equaled the 15 achieved throughout the first three quarters. It led to five Vikings goals, but the Red Men scored four of their own to lock a 17-5 win.
Carthage will return to action on Wednesday, April 17 at Elmhurst College for a 7:30 p.m. start.
