KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College men's lacrosse team embarked on a Saturday-afternoon tilt at University of Dubuque's Oyen Field in Dubuque, Iowa. The Spartans couldn't live up to the Red Men's nearly flawless outing in a 19-3 blasting.
The Winnipeg connection in
Andy Szun and
Colin Poitras each netted five goals for the Carthage offense, while
Noah Lindner contributed a hat trick.
Jack Savini netted his first two collegiate goals against the Spartans. Carthage's nine man-up goals tied a single-game program record, also achieved on March 9, 2013 in a 28-2 win over DePauw.
The Red Men's perfect day began with their 19-of-19 ratio in clears, and held Dubuque to a dismal 15-of-24 mark. The defense had a lot to do with that as
Joe Poremba and Szun each contributed a trio of caused turnovers, which commanded a unit that generated 15 for the game.
Griffin Cleary also brought a flawless presence to Carthage's lineup as he notched a 16-of-17 mark in the face-off circle, which included a game-high 13 ground balls.
The Red Men outshot Dubuque 66-22.
Sam Kotsonas,
Zerik Rodriguez and
Kyle Guthrie all saw action in net for Carthage and combined for seven saves. Spartan goalie Samuel Kopecky notched 18 saves in the complete-game loss.
Carthage improves to 11-3, 2-1 CCIW while Dubuque falls to 5-10, 1-4 CCIW.
Red Men 19, Dubuque 3
Carthage jumped to an 8-0 halftime lead, thanks to Szun's three goals throughout the opening 30:00. The big lead didn't provoke the Red Men to take their foot off the gas pedal as they peppered Dubuque for a 23-2 shots advantage in the third quarter, which included four man-up tallys and eight caused turnovers en route to a 13-1 cushion. Dubuque's first goal occurred with 6:04 left in the third, which made things 11-1. The Red Men added four more man-up goals in the fourth, which helped cement them a 19-3 victory.
The Red Men will host Carroll University (Wis.) in a CCIW bout on Tuesday, April 23 at 7:00 p.m.
