Slow Start Haunts Red Men Against Eagles

Box Score
KENOSHA, WIS.—The back end of a two-game home stand was a cold one for the Carthage men's lacrosse team at Art Keller Field on Saturday afternoon. The Red Men were faced with a 36 degree, cloudy afternoon for their showdown against Benedictine University.

Both the Eagles and Red Men came off victories prior to their meeting. Benedictine, a Midwest Lacrosse Conference member, defeated CCIW foe Elmhurst College 13-11 on March 2. Carthage looked to build their first win-streak of the season after defeating Beloit College 10-3 on February 27.

A slow start that saw Carthage surrender eight first-half goals doomed them in an 8-4 loss to Benedictine University on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Men fall to 1-2, 0-0 CCIW while Benedictine improves to 2-0, 0-0 MLC.

Benedictine came out flying on all cylinders and peppered the Red Men for 16 shots in the first quarter. Those shots resulted in five goals for the Eagles en route to a 5-0 lead.

Matthew Johnson registered two of the five Eagle goals in the first quarter. This triggered Carthage head coach David Neff to swap Ryan Smith in goal with 2:40 left in the first frame.

The Red Men reversed their fortunes in the second quarter as they outshot the Eagles 14-6 in the frame, but that didn't faze the Eagles. Johnson notched his third goal of the contest at the 12:02 mark of the second quarter to make the score 6-0.

Dell Hune and David Blanco each notched a goal to close the frame to extend the Eagle lead to 8-0 at halftime.

The Red Men began to find the back of the net in the second half, and held the Eagles to zero goals in the process. Jared Ferrell put the Red Men on the board at 6:14 of the third quarter to make the score 8-1.

Carthage registered three goals in the fourth quarter, but it was too late en route to an 8-4 loss to the Eagles.

The Red Men outshot the Eagles 33-20 in the final three quarters. Ferrell led the Red Men scoring attack with two goals in the game.

Carthage will return to action on Saturday, March 12 at the University of Dubuque. The opening draw control is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
