How it Happened
  • Carthage wasted little time setting the tone, scoring three goals in a span of just over six minutes in the first quarter. Brandon Sawicki opened the scoring off an assist from Andy Slattery, followed by unassisted goals from Alex Bailey and Henry Arnold to build a 3-0 advantage. After Carroll got on the board with a man-up goal, Jake Westland answered at the buzzer to give the Firebirds a 4-1 lead heading into the second.

  • Carthage carried a 5-2 advantage into halftime.
  • The Firebirds broke the game open in the third quarter with a decisive scoring run. Angelo Cullen and Schugel struck just 17 seconds apart, and Sawicki added another off a feed from Westland to stretch the lead to 8-2.
  • Carroll briefly halted the surge, but Westland connected with Arnold late in the quarter to make it 9-3 entering the final frame.
  • Arnold added his second goal of the game early in the fourth, giving Carthage its largest lead at 10-3. Carroll responded with three consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 10-6, but Sawicki capped the scoring with his third goal of the afternoon to seal the 11-6 win.
