Firebirds Fall in CCIW Semifinals Despite Second-Half Push

KENOSHA — In the semifinals of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament, the No. 2 seed Carthage fell into an early deficit and was unable to recover in a 19-6 loss to the No. 3 seed Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Illinois Wesleyan 19 - Carthage 9
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Art Keller Field
  • Records: Illinois Wesleyan 11-6, Carthage 9-9
How it Happened
  • Illinois Wesleyan controlled the opening period from the outset, scoring eight times in a nine-minute stretch to build an 8-0 lead. The visitors struck first at the 12:23 mark and quickly added two more goals within the next minute to seize momentum. A steady offensive push continued throughout the remainder of the first, as Illinois Wesleyan capitalized on both assisted opportunities and unassisted runs to extend the margin to 8-0 by the 2:15 mark.
  • The second period opened with another Illinois Wesleyan goal to make it 9-0 before Carthage found a spark. Keyan Schugel broke through just five seconds later with an unassisted goal, putting the Firebirds on the board at 11:53.
  • Carthage added another unassisted score from Kyle Carollo at 9:57, trimming the deficit to 9-2. However, Illinois Wesleyan answered with two more goals before halftime, taking an 11-2 lead into the break.
  • Out of halftime, Illinois Wesleyan extended its lead to 12-2 midway through the third. Carthage responded with an unassisted goal from Henry Arnold at 7:50, but Illinois Wesleyan quickly countered with three consecutive scores to push the margin to 15-3.
  • The Firebirds showed late resilience in the quarter, as Alex Bailey and Rye Taylor each found the net in the final minutes — Taylor's goal coming off an assist from Carollo with 17 seconds remaining — to make it 15-5.
  • The visitors added a goal in the closing seconds of the third to carry a 16-5 advantage into the fourth.
  • In the final quarter, Illinois Wesleyan continued to control play with two early goals, extending the lead to 18-5.
  • Carthage answered at the 10:42 mark when Bailey scored his second goal of the game off a feed from Carollo.
  • Illinois Wesleyan closed out the scoring with one more goal at 4:10, sealing the 19-6 final.
