Red Men's 12 Unanswered Goals Lifts Them Past Spartans

Box Score

DUBUQUE, IOWA—Penalties may have separated the Carthage College men's lacrosse team from posting their first shutout since a 20-0 decision at Carroll University on April 22, 2015. All three Dubuque goals on the afternoon occurred on the man advantage.

Those three goals helped the Spartans get within one goal of the Red Men at 4-3 with 9:14 left in the first half. That early scare propelled Carthage to 12-unanswered goals to close the contest en route to a 16-3 victory in their first CCIW game of the season.

The Red Men improve to 2-2, 1-0 CCIW while the Spartans fall to 0-3, 0-1 CCIW.

Red Men 16, Spartans 3

Jared Ferrell and Dylan Harris each tallied a goal to give Carthage a 2-0 lead with 13:31 left in the first quarter.  Michael Julius registered the first of three Dubuque man advantage goals at the 1:40 mark of the first quarter to narrow their margin to 2-1.

The Spartans and Red Men each traded a pair of goals to make the score 4-3 at the 9:14 mark of the second quarter. Julius and Tyson Svoboda each tallied those Spartan goals to get them within one of the Red Men.

Carthage drew five more penalties to close the contest, but their stingy defense helped them achieve 12-unanswered goals to close the contest and secure a 16-3 victory.

Andy Szun highlighted the run with three goals. Szun and Ferrell each topped out at four goals in the contest for the Red Men.

Cameron Laird and Ryan Smith each logged 30 minutes in goal for Carthage and combined for three saves. University of Dubuque goalkeeper Kyle Mullins turned away 13 Red Men shots.

Carthage will return to action tomorrow, March 13 at Cornell College. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
