Box Score 2 The Carthage College softball team (19-5, 6-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) swept a Sunday, April 14 doubleheader from CCIW-opponent and No. 25 Augustana College (Ill., 19-9, 4-4 CCIW), 14-3 and 4-3, at Carver Field in Rock Island, Ill. The Lady Reds have nine games in a row.
Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on an RBI-single by
Katie Morman. The Lady Reds made it a 6-0 game with a five-run third inning. Carthage scored on RBI-doubles by
Vicki Pyan and
Olivia Scott, along with an RBI-grounder off the bat of
Amy Slattery and a two-run single by
Jen Precht. A two-run homer by the Vikings' Krista Watson in the bottom of the third cut the lead to 6-2.
The Lady Reds scored three time in the fourth to make it 9-2, with
Olivia Scott hitting a two-run homer in the inning. The Vikings got a run back in the fifth to cut the lead to 9-3. Carthage exploded with five runs in the sixth for the final, 14-3 margin.
Olivia Scott (So., Plainfield, Ill./Central) led Carthage's 14-hit attack by going two-for-three with three runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBI. Pitcher
Krystina Leazer (Sr., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) upped her record to 11-2. Leazer surrendered three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks over six innings. Sarah Hintz (8-4) took the loss and gave up the first 11 runs in five and one-third innings.
In the second game, the Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Lady Reds came back with single runs in the second and third innings to go up, 2-1.
Bryanna Heckel singled home the run in the second and
Alyse Mikolas singled in the third-inning score. Augustana took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI-single by Amanda Johnson and an RBI-double by Cheyenne Burnett.
That's the way it stayed until the bottom of the seventh when Carthage's
Katie Morman led off with a single, and
Abby Hanson (Jr., Winthrop Harbor, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) followed with a walk-off, two-run homer to win the game, 4-3.
Olivia Scott went three-for-three to cap a five-for-six day. Pitcher Tina Campbell (Jr., St. Petersburg, Ill./Lakewood) started the game but gave way to
Krystina Leazer in the fourth. Leazer blanked the Vikings on three hits and five strikeouts over the final three and one-third innings to improve to 12-2. Ashley Anderson (6-3) was the losing pitcher.
Carthage travels to Naperville, Ill., on Tuesday, April 16 to play CCIW-opponent and No. 23 North Central College (25-1, 3-1 CCIW) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Shanower Family Softball Field. The Cardinals are currently in second place behind undefeated Carthage.
