Box Score 2 The Carthage College softball team (17-5, 4-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) swept a Friday, April 12 doubleheader from CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 12-9, 1-3 CCIW), 6-0 and 5-2, at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on an RBI-single by
Katie Morman. The Lady Reds scored again in the second on an RBI-single by Heckel. Heckel singled in another run in the fourth to pout Carthage up, Heckel singled in another run in the fourth to put Carthage up, 3-0.
Abby Hanson lifted a two-run home run to left in the fifth, and the Lady Reds led, 5-0.
Corinne Sheley scored on a stolen base and two throwing errors in the sixth for the final run.
Krystina Leazer (Sr., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) upped her record to 10-2 by limiting the Thunder to no runs on one hits and three walks over seven innings with five strikeouts. Danielle Schmidt (7-4) took the loss. Carthage's
Bryanna Heckel (Jr., Kenosha, Wis./Salem-Westosha Central) went three-for-three with two RBI, and
Abby Hanson (Jr., Winthrop Harbor, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) had two hits in three trips, also with two RBI.
In the second game, Carthage scored twice in the second inning on a pair of wild pitches from Thunder hurler Katie Thornton.
Bryanna Heckel singled in a run in the fourth, and Carthage led, 3-0. An RBI-grounder off the bat of
Olivia Scott and an RBI-single by
Alyse Mikolas in the fifth inning made it 5-0. The Thunder scored twice in the bottom the fifth to close out the scoring at 5-2.
Krystina Leazer entered the game in relief of Tina Campbell in the fifth, and the second run of the inning was charged to Leazer.
Tina Campbell (Jr., St. Petersburg, Ill./Lakewood, 7-3) was the winning pitcher, with Katie Thornton (4-4) taking the loss.
Vicki Pyan (Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill./South) had two hits in four trips to the plate for Carthage. The Lady Reds travel to Rock Island, Ill., on Sunday, April 14 to take on conference-opponent and No. 25 Augustana College (Ill., 19-7, 4-2 CCIW) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Carver Field.
