Box Score The Carthage College men's basketball team (3-4, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday, Dec. 10 with a 51-43 win over Albion College (3-3) at Kresge Gymnasium in Albion, Mich.

Albion's last lead was 13-12 at 10:28 first period.  A three-pointer by Reese Herth at 9:08 put Carthage up to stay, 15-12.  The Red Men led by three points at halftime, 25-22.  A 17-6 run to start the second half gave Carthage a 14 –point lead, 42-28, at 9:48.  Max Cary, who missed Tuesday's Lake Forest game with a leg injury, scored on two three-pointers and two free throws in that run.  The Britons narrowed the gap to four points, 47-43, with 15 seconds to play, but Malcom Kelly, who was fouled twice down the stretch, made all four free throws for the final, 51-43 margin.

Carthage shot just 31 percent (15-49), while Albion shot just 33 percent (17-52).  The Red Men had a big, 46-34 rebounding advantage over the Britons.  Malcom Kelly (Jr., Kenosha, Wis./Reuther) led the way with 14 points on just three-of-10 field goals and zero-for-four from three-point range, along with seven rebounds.

Max Cary (Sr., Geneva, Ill.) had 12 points, while Luke Johnson (Fr., Naperville, Ill./West Chicago-Wheaton Academy) scored nine points, a game-high 17 rebounds, five offensive and 12 defensive, and six blocked shots.  “Seventeen is a monster number,” said Carthage head coach Bosko Djurickovic.  “Luke is such a talented young man, and he's going to get better and better.  We have to create opportunities for him, offensively, and just let him do what he does defensively and on the boards.  If we can do that, we have a chance to be an excellent basketball team.”  Mike Smith was the lone Albion player in double figures with 10 points.

“Winning is better than losing,”  said Djurickovic,” but I don't remember the last time we won a game with 51 points.  We weren't trying to play slow, but that's the way the game developed.  We'll take this one and head home.  The last time Carthage won a game with 51 points or less was a 50-46 win over Augustana College (Ill.) on Dec. 28, 1985 in the consolation game of the Wittenberg University “Holiday Classic” in Springfield, Ohio.

Carthage plays host to Coe College (3-4) on Sunday, Dec. 11 in a 5 p.m. game at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
