Women's Tennis Competes in Warhawk Invitational

WHITEWATER - The Carthage women's tennis team competed in the Warhawk Invitational on Saturday on the campus of Wis-Whitewater. The Firebirds placed sixth in a field of eight teams, scoring a total of 19 points across six brackets.

In the Singles 1 bracket, Jordan Miller opened up with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Lena Lichau (Luther). Miller dropped a second match in the consolation bracket to Magdalena Kristo (Wis-Eau Claire), as the Blugold won the match 6-2, 6-4. In the seventh-place match, Miller earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sarah Schaefer (Wis-Oshkosh). Miller scored a pair of points for the Firebirds.

Valentina Huesca represented the Firebirds in the Singles 2 bracket, falling to Laurel Buttrick (Grinnell) 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round. Huesca moved to the consolation bracket and faced off against Aubrey Wittwer (Wis-Eau Claire). Wittwer won the match with a final score of 6-0, 6-2. In the seventh-place match, Huesca cruised to a win over Sophie Gish (Wis-Oshkosh) with a pair of 6-1 victories. Huesca added two points to the team score.

Mia Tarmichael closed out singles play for the Firebirds in the Singles 3 bracket. In the opening round, Tarmichael fell 6-1, 6-3 to Ana Paula Ricaurte. Moving to the consolation bracket, Tarmichael dropped a 6-1, 6-4 battle with Morgan Perkins (Wis-La Crosse). Tarmichael then claimed the seventh-place match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Olivia Nielsen (Wis-Oshkosh). Tarmichael scored two points for Carthage.

In Doubles 1, Kamila Dobija and Niki Manojlovic opened with an 8-0 loss to Logan Tom and Marta Gonzalez (Grinnell). In the consolation bracket, Dobija and Manojlovic bounced back with an 8-0 win over Jameson Gregory and Kayla Gibbs (Wis-Oshkosh), before falling 8-7 (8-6) to Liselot van den Broek and Avery Schifsky (Luther) in the consolation finals. The duo tallied three points for the Firebirds.

In the Doubles 2 bracket, Rya Arreazola and Greta Peterson earned an 8-3 victory over Sofia Carr and Ava Lannen (Augustana) in the first round before falling 8-1 to Maia Samuelson and Lauren Lindow (Wis-La Crosse). In the third-place match, the duo defeated Brianna Owens and Olivia Pethan (Wis-Oshkosh) 8-7 (7-5) to score six points for Carthage.

In Doubles 3, Ella Krauter and Sabina Skudrnova fell 8–3 to Kayla Surpless and Adelle Persian (Grinnell) in the first round. The pair then earned an 8-7 (8-6) win over Cate Bright and Olivia Huinker (Luther) in the consolation semifinals, before defeating Taylor Longdin and Peyton Peterson (Wis-Oshkosh) with a final score of 8-3.

Carthage tennis returns to action on Sept. 13 for a CCIW dual with Carroll (Wis.) in Waukesha, Wis. at 10:30 a.m. The Firebirds return to Smeds Tennis Center on Sept. 16 to host Wheaton (Ill.). For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
