KANSASVILLE, Wis. — The Carthage College men's golf team placed three teams inside the top 19 at the Midwest Region Classic on Friday and Saturday at Brighton Dale Links. The Firebirds' B team tied for third with a two-round team score of 585, the A team tied for fifth with a 587, and the C team tied for 19th with a 608.
Nick Barry led the Firebirds individually, tying for fifth with a two-round score of 143 after rounds of 75 and 68. Elliott Leibham tied for 13th with a 145, carding rounds of 72 and 73, while
Colton Woodring also tied for 13th at 145 after shooting 74 in the opening round and 71 in the second.
Zachary Ramos and
Rylan Frazer both tied for 21st with scores of 146. Ramos recorded rounds of 72 and 74, while Frazer shot 74 and 72.
Brett Vandergrift followed by tying for 28th at 147 after rounds of 70 and 77.
James Tyrrell tied for 33rd with a 148, shooting 77 in the first round before finishing with a 71.
Grady Puett tied for 56th at 150 after rounds of 74 and 76, while
Grant Faherty tied for 68th with a 151, carding rounds of 74 and 77.
"Our teams finishing 3rd, 5th, and 19th out of 42 teams, to me really shows both our impressive depth, and that we have some legit high level talent."
"The B team besting the A team by a couple strokes is another testament to both our depth and our talent. The B's go out and shoot 290 on day 1, the A's come back and shoot 287 on day 2. Both those rounds are team season lows. I guess it is pretty obvious to say that the competition to earn a spot on the A team right now is crazy high."
"Nick shooting 68 on day 2, Brett shooting a 70 on day 1, James and Colton firing 71's on day 2, Zach shooting an even par 72 on day 1, Rylan a 72 on day 2, and Elliott shooting a 72 on day 1 - those are all legit big time rounds. That is seven different guys playing at par or better. Wow - that is just really, really solid golf."
"Although we don't have too many events left in our fall season, these guys are just gonna keep working and working. It is in their DNA. They push themselves, they push each other, and they love it."
