Women's Tennis Splits Midweek Doubleheader in Orlando

ORLANDO – The Carthage women's tennis team competed in a midweek doubleheader against the St. Catherine Wildcats and the St. Scholastica Saints in Florida. After coming up short in a tight battle against the Wildcats, the Firebirds bounced back to defeat the Saints and earn the doubleheader split.

How it Happened 

VS ST. CATHERINE

In doubles play, Niki Manojlovic and Marie Weis dropped a 6-1 decision in No. 2 doubles against Marie Pelletier and Ryanna Steinhaus. Ashley King and Faith Simon earned a No. 1 doubles victory over Rya Arreazola and Greta Peterson, defeating the Firebird duo 7-5. In No. 3 doubles, Jordan Miller and Bella Rizzo fell short in a 7-5 battle with Melanie Gravdahl and Lily Holmberg. The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead over the Firebirds heading into singles play.

In singles play, Miller suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat in No. 4 singles to King as the Wildcats extended the lead to 2-0. Valentina Huesca got the Firebirds on the scoreboard with a win in No. 6 singles, defeating Gravdahl with a pair of 6-3 victories. Arreazola dropped a 6-2, 6-0 contest with Simon in No. 1 singles as the Wildcats jumped ahead 3-1. The Wildcats secured the victory in No. 5 singles, as Steinhaus defeated Rizzo 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to make it a 4-1 match. The Firebirds closed the match strong with Manojlovic defeating Pelletier 6-4, 6-4 in No. 3 singles and Peterson defeated Holmberg 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in No. 2 singles.

VS ST. SCHOLASTICA

In doubles play, Arreazola and Peterson earned a 6-1 win over Sophia Cosgrove and Paula Sendele in No. 1 doubles. Miller and Rizzo dropped a 6-3 battle against Hailey Hokanson and Bella Vincent in No. 3 doubles. Manojlovic and Weis then defeated Chloe Hasbargen and Claire Rewertz with a score of 6-4 in No. 2 doubles. The Firebirds took a 1-0 lead into singles play. 

In singles play, Manojlovic defeated Renata Sosa 6-1, 6-2 in No. 3 singles. Arreazola earned a 6-2, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles over Sendele. Huesca clinched the win for the Firebirds with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hasbargen in No. 6 singles as the Firebirds jumped ahead 4-0. Miller used a pair of 6-4 wins to defeat Rewertz in No. 4 singles, while Manojlovic dropped a 6-4, 6-0 match against Cosgrove in No. 3 singles. Rizzo concluded the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Vincent.
