Men's Tennis Earns 6-1 Victories Over Piedmont and St. Scholastica

ORLANDO – The Carthage men's tennis team competed in a pair of matches against Piedmont and St. Scholastica on Wednesday in Florida. The Firebirds got off to a strong start by earning a convincing win over Piedmont before cruising to victory over St. Scholastica for the team's second consecutive doubleheader sweep of the week.

How it Happened 

VS PIEDMONT

In doubles play, Ethan Foucheaux and Francisco Silveira earned a 6-2 win over Zachary McElveen and Horacio Rodriguez in No. 3 doubles. Finn Morris and Diego Silva claimed a 6-2 win in No. 1 doubles against Leyton Dunn and Charles Parnell. In No. 2 doubles, Mark Backeberg and Rohan Kavali defeated Luca Okino and Victor Pimenta by a final score of 6-2. The Firebirds took two of the three doubles matches and took a 1-0 lead over the Lions.

In singles play, Pimenta earned a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win over Allan Soto in No. 6 singles to give the Firebirds a 2-0 lead. Linus Bangert extended the Carthage lead further with a pair of 6-0 wins over Brent Sherman in No. 4 singles. Cyriac Cayuela clinched the team win with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jack Maddox in No. 3 singles to give the Firebirds a 4-0 lead. Morris then defeated Rodriguez in No. 2 singles with a pair of 6-3 victories. The Lions found the scoreboard in No. 1 singles, as Backeberg defeated Silva 6-3, 6-4. Okino concluded the match with a  6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), (10-5) win over Amirjon Latipov in No. 5 singles to give Carthage a 6-1 victory over the Lions.

VS ST. SCHOLASTICA

In doubles play, Marco Czosnyka and Daniel Jaworski dropped a 6-2 match in No. 2 doubles against Dane Patten and Finn Schulze-Topphoff. In No. 3 doubles, Payton Nelson and James Schweitzer fell 6-2 to Andy Shaffer and Daniel Torres. Foucheaux and Silveira dropped a tightly contested 7-6 (7-3) contest against Eamon Gerrard-Stace and Mateo Torre in No. 1 doubles. The Saints claimed the doubles point over the Firebirds.

In singles play, Foucheaux claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 6 singles over Drew Anderson. Bangert then defeated Torres 6-0, 6-2 in No. 4 singles, while Pimenta earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Harper Dircks. Cayuela utilized a pair of 6-2 victories to defeat Schulze-Topphoff in No. 3 singles right before Morris defeated Patten with a pair of 6-3 wins in No. 2 singles. Silveira closed out singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Torre in No. 1 singles.
