KENOSHA — The Carthage men's volleyball team moved to the top of the national rankings Tuesday, earning the No. 1 position in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Men's Volleyball Poll.
The Firebirds climbed two spots after being ranked No. 3 last week and were previously selected No. 2 in the preseason poll. The rise comes after an undefeated week in which Carthage secured a pair of conference sweeps.
Carthage defeated St. Norbert, 3-0, before closing the week with another straight-set victory over Augustana (Ill.), 3-0. The wins kept the Firebirds unbeaten in conference play.
Following the performances, senior outside hitter
Ryan Bartz and setter
Ryan Morey were recognized by the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) with weekly honors. Bartz was named CCIW Hitter of the Week, while Morey earned CCIW Setter of the Week.
Bartz led the offensive effort across the two matches, totaling 27 kills with four errors on 49 attempts for a .469 hitting percentage. Morey directed the Firebirds' offense throughout the week, helping guide the team to efficient attacking performances in both victories.
Carthage returns to action Saturday, March 14, hosting Dominican (Ill.) at 3 p.m. at Tarble Arena.
