Men's Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader Against Carleton and St. Olaf

OWATONNA – The Carthage men's tennis team traveled to Minnesota for a Saturday doubleheader against the Carleton Knights and the St. Olaf Oles. The Firebirds got off to a strong start in the neutral site contest, using five straight wins in singles play to earn the win over the Knights.

How it Happened 

VS CARLETON

In doubles play, Luca Okino and Victor Pimenta defeated Zach Leslie and Baiyun Jing 6-2 in No. 2 doubles. Finn Morris and Diego Silva fell in No. 1 doubles to Akshay Garapati and Jack Rivkin with a final score of 6-4. In No. 3 doubles, Owen Heidtke and Ezra Bernhard defeated Cyriac Cayuela and Francisco Silveira 6-3. The Knights earned the doubles team point and took a 1-0 lead. 

In singles play, the Knights extended their lead in No. 2 singles as Jing defeated Silva with a pair of 6-2 victories. The Firebirds found the scoreboard in No. 6 singles as Pimenta defeated Heidtke 6-1, 6-2. The Firebirds then tied the match at 2-2 with Linus Bangert defeating Rivkin 6-2, 6-3 in No. 5 singles. Carthage then took a 3-2 lead as Morris earned the go-ahead score with a 6-4, 5-7, (10-3) win in No. 3 singles over Leslie. Silveira extended the lead with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over Garapati in No. 1 singles. Cayuela capped off the 5-2 win for the Firebirds with a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) win over Bernhard in No. 4 singles. 

VS ST. OLAF

In doubles play, Morris and Silva defeated Bogden Vizoli and Lou Smith 6-1 in No. 1 doubles. In No. 3 doubles, Bangert and Ethan Foucheaux defeated Daniel Meunier and Joe O'Flaherty 6-2. The Firebirds swept doubles play with a win in No. 2 doubles as Pimenta and Okino defeated Madden Vanderwerf and Marjan Veldic 6-3. The Firebirds to a 1-0 lead into singles play. 

Okino kept the scoring going for the Firebirds in No. 3 singles, defeating Jake Shultz 6-0, 6-2. Pimenta defeated Mason Ramirez 6-1, 6-0 in No. 5 singles to give the Firebirds a 3-0 lead. Morris secured the team victory for the Firebirds, using a pair of 6-2 wins to defeat Veldic in No. 2 singles. Foucheaux defeated O'Flaherty 6-0, 6-2 in No. 6 singles to extend the Carthage lead further before Cayuela earned a 5-7, 6-1, (11-9) win over Vanderwerf in No. 3 singles to give the Firebirds a 6-0 lead over the Oles. Silveira completed the shutout with a 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), (10-8) win in No. 1 singles over Vizoli.
