Men's Tennis Sweeps Coe and Central to Start Spring Slate

CEDAR RAPIDS – The Carthage men's tennis team returned to action in 2026 with a Saturday doubleheader against the Coe Kohawks and the Central Dutch. It was a strong outing for the Firebirds, as the team opened the day with a hard fought win over the Kohawks before claiming a shutout victory over the Dutch to start the season 2-0.

How it Happened 

VS COE

In doubles play, the Kohawks jumped ahead in no. 2 doubles with Daniel Rohlman and Anthony Schulte defeating Cyriac Cayuela and Francisco Silveira 6-2. The Firebirds leveled the score with a win in no. 1 singles, with Finn Morris and Diego Silva earning a 7-5 win over Bryton Short and Jumpei Kasai. The Kohawks claimed the team point with a win in no. 3 doubles after Luca Okino and Victor Pimenta fell 6-3 against Ivan Burt-Smith and Joshua Tiemann. The Kohawks led the Firebirds 1-0 heading into singles play.

In singles play, Cayuela leveled the score at 1-1 with a win in no. 4 singles, defeating Burt-Smith 6-1, 6-4. The Kohawks recaptured the lead at 2-1 with Tiemann earning a 6-3, 7-6 (11-9) win over Silva in no. 2 singles. The Firebirds responded with a win in no. 3 singles as Morris defeated Short 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. The Kohawks jumped ahead 3-2 as Schulte earned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Silveira in no. 1 singles. Linus Bangert leveled the score at 3-3 with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-1) win over Kasai in no. 5 singles. The dual came down to no. 6 singles, where Okino defeated Luke Doig 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to help the Firebirds win the dual 4-3.

VS CENTRAL

The Firebirds swept doubles play to start the match, with Silva and Morris defeating Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy and Gavin Jablonski 6-1 in no. 1 doubles to kick off the back half of the doubleheader. In no. 3 doubles, Pimenta and Cayula earned a 6-0 shutout win over Brody Ferrell and Trey Hull. Ethan Foucheaux and Bangert earned a 6-1 win over Nile Christensen and Francisco Molina in no. 2 doubles to complete the sweep for the Firebirds.

In singles play, Morris cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win over Alvarez Chedzoy in no. 1 singles to give the Firebirds a 2-0 lead. Bangert then defeated Christensen in no. 3 singles while Pimenta earned the win in no. 4 singles over Molina, with both winning their matches 6-0, 6-0. Cayuela continued the success for Carthage with a 6-3, 6-1 win in no. 2 singles to extend the Firebirds lead to 5-0. Okino earned a 6-0, 6-2 win in no. 6 singles over Ferrell, while Foucheaux defeated Hull 6-4, 6-0 in no. 5 singles to complete the shutout victory.
