Women's Tennis Splits Sunday Doubleheader

RACINE – The Carthage women's tennis team hosted a pair of duals on Sunday afternoon at the LifeSport Tennis Club. The Firebirds opened the day with a loss against the Wis-Eau Claire Blugolds and finished the day off with a bounce-back win against the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks.

How it Happened 

VS WIS-EAU CLAIRE

In doubles play, Niki Manojlovic and Sasha Manojlovic dropped a #1 doubles match by a final score of 6-1 to Samantha Fuchs and Anna Lee. Giovanna Mendes and Greta Peterson fell 6-2 in #3 doubles to Tea Armstrong and Olivia Herzog. Maddie Kearney and Xingchen Liu dropped a #2 doubles match against Morgan Dekan and Beatriz Felchak with the final score reading 6-4. The Blugolds swept doubles play and took a 1-0 lead over the Firebirds.

In singles play, Peterson fell to Laa 6-0, 6-3 in #2 singles. Mendes dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match against Felchak in #3 singles to give the Blugolds a 3-0 lead. The Blugolds secured the win S. Manojlovic falling with a pair of 6-3 losses in #1 singles to Fuchs. Kearney dropped a 6-4, 6-1 match against Herzog in #4 singles. Marie Weis lost a 6-1, 6-2 battle in the #6 singles match against Aubrey Wittwer. N. Manojlovic fell to Reese Burton 6-1, 4-6, (10-2) to complete the 7-0 shutout for the Blugolds.

VS ILLINOIS TECH

In doubles play, Mendes and Peterson earned a 6-0 shutout victory over Angelica Conwell and Paige Geiger in #2 doubles. Maddie Berglund and Victoria Rizzo defeated Ashley Dame and Maria Oscoz 6-2 in the #3 doubles match. The Manojlovic duo earned a 6-4 win over Martyna Kalinowska and Hannah Markiewicz in #1 doubles to finish the doubles sweep for the Firebirds. Carthage took a 1-0 lead into singles play.

In singles play, N. Manojlovic got the Firebirds started with #5 singles win over Conwell, defeating her opponent with a pair of 6-0 victories. Larissa Ishikawa defeated Oscoz 6-0, 6-1 in #6 singles to give the Firebirds an early 3-0 lead. Mendes secured the Carthage victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Geiger in #3 singles. In #4 singles, Kearney defeated Dame 6-0, 6-4, giving Carthage a 5-0 lead. Peterson earned a #5 singles win over Markiewicz with a final score of 6-4, 6-3. The Scarlet Hawks found the scoreboard in #1 singles as S. Manojlovic came up short in a 3-6, 6-4, (10-5) battle with Kalinowska. The Firebirds took the match 6-1.
