#4 Carthage 4, #5 Carroll 1
BLOOMINGTON – The Carthage women's tennis team competed in the opening round of the 2025 CCIW Women's Tennis Tournament on Thursday afternoon. The Firebirds, ranked no. 4 in the CCIW, competed against the no. 5 ranked Carroll Pioneers. The Firebirds jumped ahead in doubles before closing out the win in singles play.

 

In doubles play, Maddie Kearney and Xingchen Liu defeated Makayla Counsell and Gracie Niebler 6-1 in #2 doubles. Giovanna Mendes and Greta Peterson earned a 6-1 win over Erin Horzewski and Aalaiya Jacklin in #3 doubles. Carthage took a 1-0 lead on the team scoreboard.

In singles play, Sasha Manojlovic fell to Trifilio 6-0, 6-2 in #2 singles to tie the match at 1-1. Peterson won a 6-1, 6-3 match in #3 singles over Niebler to give Carthage a 2-1 lead. Kearney defeated Horzewski 6-3, 6-1 in #5 singles to extend the Firebird lead to 3-1. Niki Manojlovic capped off the Carthage victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win in #6 singles over Jacklin.


 
The Firebirds (12-8) return to action on Friday, April 25 as the team competes against the top-seeded North Central Cardinals in the CCIW semifinals at 10 a.m. in Bloomington, Ill. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
