DECATUR – The Carthage men's tennis team hit the road for the first time in nearly a month as the squad traveled to Illinois to take on the Millikin Big Blue at the Fairview Park Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.It was a strong performance for the Firebirds, as the team swept doubles play before cruising to a team victory in singles play.

 

In doubles play, Elios Briand and Myles Krzewinski rolled into a 6-1 victory in #1 doubles against Cole Phillips and Theodor Wolf. Marco Czosnyka and Daniel Jaworski also used a 6-1 performance to defeat Max Macke and Esteban Durand in #3 doubles. Cooper Ferruzzi and Francisco Silveira completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win over Matthew Kordesh and Clayton Maack in #2 doubles. The Firebirds took a 1-0 lead over the Big Blue.

In singles play, Finn Morris boosted the Firebirds out to a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Macke. Briand defeated Phillips with a pair of 6-1 victories to extend the lead to 3-0. Krzewinski secured the win for the Firebirds with a 6-4, 6-2 win in #1 singles against Wolf. Cyriac Cayuela earned a #5 singles win over Durand, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-3 and giving Carthage a 5-0 lead. The Big Blue were able to gather the final two points of the match as Diego Silva fell to Kordesh 6-4, 1-6, (12-10) in #4 singles and Silveira fell to Maack 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in #2 singles.


 
The Firebirds (12-6) return to action on Saturday, April 12 as the squad heads to Bloomington, Ill. to take on Illinois Wesleyan at 10 a.m. Carthage men's tennis returns to Smeds Tennis Center on Thursday, April 17 as the Firebirds celebrate Senior Day against Carroll at 3 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
