RACINE – The Carthage men's tennis team hosted the North Central Cardinals at the LifeSport Tennis Club on Saturday evening to open conference play. The Firebirds dropped the team point in doubles play before coming up short in a come from behind effort in singles play.

 

In doubles play, Cyriac Cayuela and Finn Morris fell in #3 doubles to Ignacio Hernandez Ruiz and Justin Penados. Cooper Ferruzzi and Francisco Silveira earned a 6-3 win in #2 doubles over Rafael Lessa and Phillipp Wottgen. Elios Briand and Myles Krzewinski came up short in a 7-6 (8-6) loss to Matt Senghommachanh and Ramon Vilarroig Martinez in the #1 doubles match. The Cardinals claimed the team point and took a 1-0 lead.

In singles play, Krzewinski dropped a 6-4, 6-0 contest in #1 singles to Vilarroig Martinez, boosting the Cardinals lead to 2-0. Cayuela got the Firebirds on the board with a #5 singles win, defeating Penados 6-4, 6-2. Ferruzzi dropped a #6 singles match with a pair of 6-3 losses to Henry Ros. North Central took a 3-1 lead at the halfway point of singles play. Briand cut the deficit to 3-2 with a #3 singles win over Hernandez Ruiz, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-1. The Cardinals claimed the win after Senghommachanh used a pair of 6-4 victories to defeat Silveira in #2 singles. Diego Silva dropped a tight 7-6 (12-10), 7-6 (7-2) battle in #4 singles against Lessa as Carthage dropped the match 5-2.


 
The Firebirds (10-6) return to the LifeSport Athletic Club in Racine, Wis. on Saturday, April 5 as Carthage hosts Augustana (Ill.) at 4:15 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
