Defensive Struggles Stump Firebirds in Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST - The Carthage women's lacrosse team traveled to Illinois on Saturday for a game against the Lake Forest Foresters. The Firebirds struggled to put together a scoring run in the first half and picked up the first loss of the season.

How it Happened

FIRST QUARTER
  • The Firebirds got the scoring started with a pair of goals from August Claridge (14:21; 10:13).
  • The Foresters then found offensive momentum and went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-2 lead with 3:39 to play in the period.
  • The Firebirds cut into the deficit with a pair of goals from Emma McDonald (1:44) and Claridge (1:13) to bring the score to 5-4.
  • The Foresters scored with 31 seconds left but Kaitlyn Goff answered with a last second goal to end the quarter with the Firebirds trailing 6-5.

SECOND QUARTER
  • Piper LeFevre started the quarter with a goal (14:08) to tie the game at 6-6.
  • Back to back goals for the Foresters put the home team back in front 8-6 with 9:30 left in the half.
  • Claridge added another goal (8:33) before the Foresters ended the half on a 4-0 run to lead 12-7 at the break.

THIRD QUARTER
  • The Foresters registered another goal to take a 13-7 lead.
  • Claridge found the back of the net (4:19) to cut the deficit to 13-8 to end the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Foresters opened the period with a pair of goals, extending the lead to 15-8 with 8:59 to play.
  • The Firebirds responded with a pair of goals from Bailey Koestel (8:12) and Claridge (7:16) brought the Firebirds back within five goals of the lead.
  • The Foresters went on a 2-1 run to close out the game and earn a 17-11 victory.

High Flyers
  • Claridge finished with seven goals, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers.
