Carthage Rolls to First NCAA Tournament Victory in Program History

GRANVILLE — In its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship, the Carthage College women's lacrosse team secured its first NCAA Tournament victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Transylvania 14-7. The Firebirds overcame early jitters with a dominant second and third quarter performance to advance in the National Tournament.

How it Happened
  • Transylvania struck first with a goal at the 12:50 mark of the opening quarter before Carthage answered less than two minutes later as Kyleigh Higgins scored to even the contest at one with 11:17 remaining.
  • The Pioneers regained the lead at 2-1, but the Firebirds responded with three straight goals. Auggie Claridge tied the game at the 5:08 mark before Higgins converted a free-position opportunity to give Carthage its first lead of the afternoon at 3-2.
  • Kelsey O'Brien extended the advantage with 2:24 left in the first quarter off an assist from Claridge, and Rosie Nolan added another score at the 1:41 mark to send the Firebirds into the second quarter ahead 5-2.
  • Hannah Kim opened the second-quarter scoring with a free-position goal, stretching the lead to 6-2. Higgins followed with another score at the 11:31 mark, and Claridge added a goal through traffic to make it 8-2.
  • Transylvania answered with three consecutive goals, trimming the deficit to 8-5 late in the second quarter, but Carthage maintained control heading into halftime.
  • Claridge halted the momentum less than a minute into the third quarter with her third goal of the game before adding another free-position score to push the Firebirds ahead 10-5.
  • Higgins extended the lead to six with 8:17 remaining in the third, then connected with O'Brien on a scoring play that made it 12-5. Just 40 seconds later, Claridge scored again on an unassisted effort to give Carthage a commanding 13-5 advantage.
  • In the fourth quarter, Claridge recorded her fifth goal of the contest to increase the lead to 14-5.
  • Transylvania scored twice late, but the Firebirds closed out the historic 14-7 victory.
