Firebirds Finish Historic Season in NCAA Championship Second Round

GRANVILLE — The historic season for the Carthage College women's lacrosse team came to a close Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship, as the Firebirds fell to Denison 20-7. Carthage finishes the year 16-4 after making the program's deepest postseason run and first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.

How it Happened
  • Denison opened the game with two quick goals before extending its lead to 4-0 midway through the opening quarter.
  • The Big Red added two free-position goals late in the first and carried a 7-0 advantage into the second quarter.
  • Carthage broke through in the second quarter when Piper LeFevre converted a free-position opportunity for the Firebirds' first goal of the afternoon.
  • LeFevre struck again later in the quarter to trim the deficit to six, but Denison answered and took a 10-2 lead into halftime.
  • Auggie Claridge opened the scoring in the third quarter for Carthage with the team's third goal of the contest.
  • The Big Red responded with four goals in the quarter to extend the lead to 14-3.
  • LeFevre completed her hat trick on another free-position goal to bring the score to 14-4 heading into the fourth.
  • Claridge added her second goal of the game early in the final quarter to make it 14-5, but Denison answered moments later to push the margin back to 11.
  • LeFevre added her fourth goal of the afternoon and a goal from Kyleigh Higgins in the closing minutes before Denison secured the 20-7 victory.
