Anderson Claims 157 Title as Firebirds Compete at NCAA Regionals

ST. PAUL — Carthage College wrestlers delivered strong performances at the NCAA Regionals, highlighted by Zaren Anderson's first-place finish in the 157-pound division. Carthage finished eighth out of 16 teams. 

How it Happened

125 Division 

  • Chris Kish opened his tournament with a dominant technical fall victory over JP Culver (Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 20-3, 6:30). In the quarterfinals, he battled Thomas Turner (Pacific) to sudden victory but fell 7-4. Kish rebounded in the consolation bracket with a pin over Jeison Ingram (Concordia-Moorhead, 4:07) before dropping a technical fall match to Izzy Balsiger (Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 20-4, 5:30).
  • He concluded his run with an eighth-place finish after a fall to Chris Karbash (Wisconsin-Platteville, 4:27).

133 Division 

  • Zach Miller had a tough outing, losing by fall to Tyler Evitts (Aurora, 2:13) in the opening round. He received a bye in the first consolation round but was eliminated following a fall to Connor Krueger (St. Johns, 2:35).

141 Division 

  • Cole Nelson had a strong tournament, starting with a first-round pin over Garrett Marks (Wisconsin-Platteville, 2:34). After a narrow 4-2 quarterfinal loss to Jake Penzato (Aurora), Nelson surged through the consolation rounds, earning a technical fall over Jose De Los Santos (St. Johns, 21-6, 5:49) and a major decision over Max Sanderfoot (MSOE, 13-5).
  • He dropped a 4-2 decision to Cole Becker (Augsburg) in the consolation semifinals but secured fifth place with a dominant technical fall over Penzato (Aurora, 20-2, 4:18).

149 Division 

  • Elijah Zepeda opened with a 12-7 decision loss to Michael Rodriguez (Augustana). He received a bye in the consolation bracket before being eliminated by major decision to Connor Nagela (MSOE, 15-4).

157 Division 

  • Zaren Anderson had an outstanding tournament, capturing first place. He opened with a thrilling 3-2 tiebreaker victory over Kris Castro (St. Johns) and followed with a 2-1 decision against Landon Church (Wisconsin-Eau Claire).
  • Anderson continued his momentum with a 7-6 semifinal win over Karsen Otis (Augsburg) and was crowned champion after winning by forfeit over Michael Macias (Augustana).

165 Division 

  • CJ Gilbert faced a tough opening-round loss by technical fall to Toren Vandenbush (MSOE, 17-0, 2:18). He bounced back in the consolation bracket with a major decision over Blake Delsman (Wisconsin-Platteville, 9-1) and a decision over Elijah Hunt (Concordia-Moorhead, 8-2) before falling to Austin Martin (Aurora, 7-3).
  • Gilbert finished seventh after a 6-2 decision win over Logan Thorsten (St. Johns).

174 Division 

  • Collin Ruiz fell in his opening match to Jack Miller (Augustana) by major decision (11-2). He responded with an 8-0 major decision over Kyle Rasper (Wisconsin-Oshkosh) but was eliminated after an 8-0 major decision loss to Zach Pribyl (Concordia-Moorhead).

184 Division 

  • Devin Rogers started strong with a first-round pin over Vincent Bird (Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 2:22). He dropped a major decision to Brandt Bombard (Augsburg, 12-0) in the quarterfinals but rebounded with a 10-9 decision over Zach Hunter (St. Johns).
  • His run ended with an 11-5 loss to Gavin Graham (MSOE), but he secured seventh place with a commanding 19-6 major decision over Sage Adie (Pacific).

197 Division 

  • Diego Fuentes opened his tournament with a first-round fall to Ian Pepple (Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 2:00).
  • He advanced in the consolation bracket with a bye but was ultimately eliminated after an 11-2 major decision loss to Logan Neitzel (Wisconsin-Stevens Point).

285 Division 

  • Mason Kochersperger opened with a 4-1 decision win over Aidan Wayne (St. Johns) before a narrow quarterfinal loss to Josh Woodrey (Augustana, 2-1).
  • In the consolation bracket, he earned a 2-0 decision over Kei'Aviyahn Evans (Concordia-Wisconsin) but was eliminated after a 6-4 decision loss to Mason Swanson (Concordia-Moorhead).
  • He finished eighth after a rematch loss to Aidan Wayne (4-1).

  • Anderson will now compete in the NCAA Championships which starts Friday, March 14.
