Leal and Rose Earn All-American Honors at NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

ROCHESTER - Lucas Leal and Tyler Rose of the Carthage men's track & field team competed in the weight throw at the 2025 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday morning. It was a strong day for the Firebirds, as both student-athletes came away with All-American honors.

How it Happened

Rose got things started in the first flight of the weight throw, opening the day with a throw of 17.81 meters to place second in the flight after the first round of throws. Rochester's Jordan Johnson recorded the only throw to land farther than Rose in the opening round of Flight no. 1 at 18.44 meters. Rose scratched on his next two attempts and slid to sixth place to end the flight.

Leal competed in the second flight and registered a mark of 18.14 meters, which was the sixth farthest mark out of all first throw attempts and was ninth overall at the time. Leal's next throw marked a new personal best for the graduate student at 19.21 meters, moving him into fourth place. Leal's third throw marked at 17.93 meters and Leal finished the preliminary round in sixth place to advance to the finals.

Leal advanced to the finals in a field of nine student-athletes that included JJ Durr (Wilmington (Ohio)), Gavin Fritsch (Wis-Oshkosh), Shane Anderson (Monmouth (Ill.)), Nathan Borgan (Wilmington (Ohio)), Reagan Owen (McMurry), Isaiah Brunache (Cortland State), Magnus Wells (Augustana (Ill.)), and Chris Baker (Coe).

Leal started the final round with a scratch but held in sixth place. Another scratch on his second throw left the door open for other competitors to move ahead of the Carthage thrower, but Brunache, Wells and Baker all remained behind Leal's mark of 19.21 meters, keeping Leal in sixth. Leal's final throw of the day registered at 17.73 meters, which was enough to secure a sixth place finish and First Team All-American honors. Rose finished in 16th place and secured Second Team All-American honors.

"We had a great start to the weekend," said Assistant Coach Greg Raimondi. "Lucas and Tyler led the way on day 1 with strong performances. Tyler competed really well for his first national meet, just fouling two bigger throws that would have moved him up a couple spots. The field was deep this year to be an All-American and having this experience will be a huge help for him going into outdoor and next year. Lucas had a great day finishing sixth and earning his first All-American honors.  Really proud of him for throwing a new PR to end his indoor season and doing that at the national meet hits home how much he has grown as a competitor in this space since last year. Looking forward to seeing what these two can accomplish outdoors."

The Firebirds return to action on Thursday, March 27 at the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis, Mo. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
