Women's Tennis Sweeps Weekend Road Trip With Win Over Titans

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Carthage women's tennis team closed out the weekend with a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) dual against the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Saturday morning. The Firebirds controlled the momentum through doubles play, the Titans rallied back in singles play to keep the match close. The Firebirds earned a late victory to hold off the Titans and win the dual.

How it Happened 

In doubles play, Rya Arreazola and Greta Peterson got things started with a 6-2 win in No. 2 doubles over Gabrielle Lipske and Katie Van Heuklon. Xingchen Liu and Niki Manojlovic came up short in a 6-4 loss against Olivia Bell and Amber Ehrlich in No. 1 doubles. The team point came down to a decisive No. 3 doubles match between Carthage's Jordan Miller and Bella Rizzo and Illinois Wesleyan's Adia Douglas and Elana Religioso. In a hard-fought, back-and-forth battle that lasted 53 minutes, Miller and Rizzo came away with a 7-6 (7-5) victory to secure the team point and give the Firebirds a 1-0 lead.

In singles play, Peterson extended the Firebirds lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 3 singles over Van Heuklon. Liu then earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ehrlich in No. 1 singles to extend the lead to 3-0. The Titans found the scoreboard in No. 6 singles, as Religioso defeated Rizzo 6-3, 6-1 to bring the team score to 3-1. The Titans inched closer with a win Douglas, who defeated Miller 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in No. 5 singles. Manojlovic was able to secure the team win for the Firebirds with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over Bell in No. 4 singles. Arreazola came up short in No. 2 singles, falling 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Lipske

The Firebirds defeated the Titans 4-3.
