Men's Track & Field Claims Second Straight Victory at Firebird First Invitational

KENOSHA - The Carthage men's track and field team began the 2025 portion of the schedule by hosting the Firebird First Invitational in the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center on Saturday. It was the first contest the whole program faced since hosting the Forever Red Alumni Classic on December 7, 2024. The Firebirds were strong across all events and came away with their second straight victory of the season. 

Team Results

The Firebirds placed first overall out of six collegiate teams with 142 points. Parkside finished second with 132.50, followed by Wis-Whitewater in third with 132 points. Wisconsin Lutheran scored 44.50 points to finish fourth, and Lake Forest rounded out the top five with 41 points. 

Who Led the Way

Sprints

Mac Anderson and Luke Shugarman finished first and third place respectively in the 200-meter dash. Anderson crossed the finish line in 23.18, while Shugarman finished in 23.99. The duo combined for 16 points for the Firebirds.

Dylan Parker won the 400-meter dash in a finishing time of 51.87. 

Distance

Trevor Swanson and Luke Davey finished in third and fifth in the mile, with Swanson running 4:28.16 and Davey running 4:31.56. 

Michael Herres placed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:00.14.

Jumps

Kedrick Johnson III placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 6.43 meters. 

Throws

The duo of Tyler Rose and Jacob Brost finished first and second in the shot put, with Rose throwing 14.35 meters and Brost reaching 13.37 meters. 

The Firebirds excelled in the weight throw, as they had five individuals score points. Lucas Leal and Tyler Rose led the way finishing first and second with marks of 18.96 meters and 17.96 meters. It was a new personal best for both student-athletes in the event. Jacob Brost  finished in fourth with a new personal best throw of 16.43 meters. Jordan Hughes placed fifth with a mark of 14.74 meters. Rounding out the scoring was Caleb Haas-Rock placing eighth with a personal best mark of 13.75 meters. 

High Flyers
 
  • Leal's mark of 18.96 meters in the weight throw currently ranks second in NCAA Division III and second in Carthage program history. He leads the CCIW in the event.
  • Rose's mark of 17.96 meters in the weight throw ranks 14th in Division III and 10th all-time for Carthage. He ranks second in the CCIW in the event.
  • Herres' 800 performance ranks second in the CCIW.

Up Next

The Firebirds will be back in action Friday Jan. 24 where they will travel to Ripon, Wis. to compete in the Ripon Hawk Opener at Ripon College. The Firebirds return to Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center on February 7 as the team will host the Tadd Metzger Invitational. For more information, vision athletics.carthage.edu.
