KENOSHA – The Carthage women's tennis team hosted the Wheaton (Ill.) Thunder at Smeds Tennis Center on Fridayday afternoon. After falling behind in doubles play, the Firebirds battled back in singles play before ultimately falling to the Thunder 5-2.

 

In doubles play, Sasha Manojlovic and Giovanna Mendes fell to Madeline Gentry and Lydia Adams 6-4. Xingchen Liu and Maddie Kearney suffered a 6-2 defeat to Tatum Thurstone and Ella Malone. Niki Manojlovic and Greta Peterson earned a 6-3 victory over Alexandra Wachs and Janet Kondo. With a new rule for the 2024-25 year, the Thunder earned one team point for their performances in doubles play, as they won the split 2-1 over the Firebirds.

In singles play, Liu defeated Gentry 6-3, 6-2. S. Manojlovic earned the win over Wachs with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Mendes fell to Adams in a tight 1-6, 6-3, (7-5) battle. Peterson dropped a 6-2, 6-1 match to Malone. Kearney dropped a close 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 match against Delaney Canning. Marie Weis fell to Thurstone 6-3, 6-4. 


 
The Firebirds return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 17 as the team travels to Waukesha, Wis. for a dual against Carroll (Wis) at 3:30 p.m. Carthage women's tennis returns to Smeds Tennis Center on Oct. 4 as the Firebirds host Millikin at 3:30 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
