Congel Departs Carthage; Accepts New Role at Mercer

KENOSHA, Wis. - Carthage Athletics has announced that head women's lacrosse coach Becca Congel has accepted a new position at Mercer, a Division I school in Georgia.

Congel completed her first full season as head coach of the Firebirds, leading the team to a record of 11-7 and a 4-2 record in conference play in 2024, finishing second. Under her leadership, the Firebirds set a program record for most goals in a single game, with 27 in a victory over Augustana (Ill.). Carthage finished the regular season in the top two of the conference in multiple statistical categories, including draw control percentage (.529), saves percentage (.485), free position percentage (.514), and turnovers per game (16.75). Congel coached six College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) All-Conference selections and the First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year while also being named CCIW Coach of the Year.

Congel assumed the role of interim head women's lacrosse coach on March 21, 2023, as the Firebirds won six of their 11 contests under Congel's guidance. Six Firebirds earned all-conference honors from the CCIW. Statistically, Carthage ranked near the top in several CCIW metrics. The Firebirds led the conference in draw controls and were second in ground balls, goals per game, assists, and points. Additionally, Congel was on staff when the Firebirds went 16-3 and broke many single-season statistical records in 2022, marking the strongest season in program history.

"Coaching the Firebirds has been an incredible journey, and I am so proud of what this team has accomplished together," commented Congel. "These student-athletes' passion, dedication, and resilience have made my time at Carthage truly special. Though I'm looking forward to the new opportunities, Carthage and the relationships I've built here will always hold a special place in my heart."
