White broke the school record in discus, finishing seventh with a mark of 55.17m. White later placed third in the shot put championship section with a mark of 18.26m. He would also go on to finish seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 60.57m.
Leal placed 19th in the hammer throw at 56.87m.
"I thought we had a really good weekend and the athletes competed well for their first time at the Drake Relays," said Assistant Coach Greg Raimondi. "They did a fantastic job representing Carthage and D3 schools at a meet that included some of the top athletes across all divisions. Joseph [White] started off the weekend for the men breaking his own school record in the discus and moving up to #3 in the NCAA with a mark of 55.17m.  An hour later he came back to finish 3rd in the shot put among all divisions with a throw of 18.27m. Lucas [Leal] started off day two for us in the hammer finishing with 56.87m, the third best meet of the season for him.  Joseph came back day two to finish 7th in the hammer with a new season best of 60.57m which moves him to 6th in the NCAA. I am really proud of how they competed this weekend and am sure this experience will help them be stronger competitors as we head into championship season time."
The Firebirds will return to action on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 as Carthage is set to compete at the CCIW Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Rock Island, Ill. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
