Carthage Baseball Dominates Fontbonne in Weekend Series

ST. LOUIS, Mo.  — The Carthage College baseball team wrapped up a three-game series against Fontbonne on Sunday sweeping the Griffins for the weekend. 

The Basics
Game One 
  • Final score: Carthage 6 - Fontbonne 3 (10 Innings)
  • Location: Clayton, Mo.
  • Records: Carthage 8-3, Fontbonne 5-10

How it Happened 
  • In the first game, the Griffins scored one run in the second inning and added two more in the sixth. 
  • Carthage responded with a solo home run by Zander Tubbs to get on the scoreboard. 
  • Subsequently, a two-run homer by AJ Gaca leveled the score at three runs apiece. 
  • In the 10th inning, a three-run homer by P.J. Moser propelled the Firebirds to a 6-3 lead. 
  • Carthage secured the victory with two strikeouts and a popup to end the game.
  • The second game commenced with a homer by Moser in the second inning, setting the tone for the Firebirds. 
  • Additional RBI singles from Jake Fulton and Drew Knecht extended Carthage's lead to 3-0. 
  • An error allowed Evan Devine to score, further solidifying the Firebirds' advantage at 4-0. 
  • Devine added a home run in his next at-bat. 
  • Although Fontbonne managed to score once in the sixth inning, a two-run homer by Tubbs and another RBI single from Fulton secured a convincing 9-1 victory for Carthage.
 
  • In the opening inning of Sunday's game, the Griffins scored a solitary run. Shortly after, Joe Zuleger's home run to right field equalized the score at one apiece.
  • Fontbonne responded by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the second inning. However, Carthage countered in the third inning, with Matt Felber delivering a two-RBI double and Moser adding an RBI single to their tally.
  • Despite a solo home run narrowing the margin to 5-4 in favor of the home team, Carthage extended their lead to 7-5 with RBI singles from Zuleger and Fulton.
  • Zuleger's additional RBI single further widened the gap to three runs, and an ensuing error facilitated Wayne Karlstedt and Tubbs in scoring.
  • With Jake Pappagallo on the mound in the ninth, the Griffins managed only two flyouts and a strikeout, securing Carthage's victory.
