Firebirds Earn Fifth Straight Win in Home Opener

KENOSHA, Wis.  — The Carthage College baseball team won over Concordia (Wis.) 9-3 Tuesday afternoon at Augie Schmidt Field in their home opener. It marked the team's fifth straight win of the season.

How it Happened 
 
  • Carthage started the scoring in the opening inning courtesy of an RBI double by Matt Felber.
  • The Falcons countered in the second inning, securing a single run, but Carthage swiftly responded in the bottom half with Collin Callahan's RBI single, advancing the score to 2-1.
  • Carthage extended their advantage in the third inning as P.J. Moser smashed a solo home run.
  • Callahan propelled Carthage even further ahead in the fourth inning with a two-run homer, widening the gap to 5-1.
  • Concordia (Wis.) managed to notch a run in the seventh inning with a single, but Carthage quickly responded as Moser's two-RBI single pushed the score to 7-2.
  • The eighth inning saw both teams exchange home runs, with Jake Fulton launching one to right-center field. Additionally, a defensive miscue by the Falcons allowed Callahan to cross home plate.
  • Jake Pappagallo's ninth-inning performance, marked by a pivotal strikeout and a double play, sealed Carthage's victory with a final score of 9-3.

High Flyers
  • Collin Callahan was a double-shy of hitting for the cycle as he went 3-for-4 in the contest. 
  • P.J. Moser and Jake Fulton each added home runs for the Firebirds, while Felber had a double. 
  • On the mound, Ryan Scanlon picked up his third win of the season, striking out four through three innings of work.

  • Carthage continues their home stand as they begin conference play on Friday, March 29, taking on Millikin for a three-game series starting at 3 p.m.
