Firebird Baseball Wraps Up Florida Trip

LAKE MYERS, Fla.  — The Carthage College baseball team started their season down in Florida last weekend, going 1-2 on their trip. 

The Basics
Game One
  • Final score: Carthage 9 - Houghton 3
  • Location: Auburndale, Florida
  • Records: Carthage 1-0, Houghton 0-1

Game Two
  • Final score: Grove City 9 - Carthage 1
  • Location: Lake Myers, Florida
  • Records: Grove City 3-0, Carthage 1-1

Game Three
  • Final score: Dubuque 8 - Carthage 7
  • Location: Lake Myers, Florida
  • Records: Dubuque 4-0, Carthage 1-2


How it Happened 
  • In the first game in Florida, Carthage secured their first runs in the fourth inning as AJ Gaca's sacrifice fly, and a fielding error led to a two-run score for the Firebirds. 
  • The fifth inning saw Max Cairo's double initiating a sequence of singles from P.J. Moser and Gaca, expanding the lead to 5-0. 
  • Kody Krekling's sac fly in the sixth allowed Collin Callahan to score, and a double from Moser added two more runs, concluding with an 8-0 advantage. 
  • Houghton scored in the sixth and seventh innings, but Carthage ultimately emerged victorious with a final score of 9-3.
 
  • In the second game, P.J. Moser kickstarted the scoring for Carthage with a double in the opening inning, maintaining a 1-0 lead until the sixth. 
  • Grove City retaliated with a single run in the sixth and seven more in the seventh, turning the score to 8-1. 
  • A final run in the ninth sealed the game for Grove City with a 9-1 victory.
 
  • In the matchup against Dubuque, Carthage initially trailed 1-0 after a third-inning sac fly. 
  • The Firebirds responded in the fifth as Jake Fulton's single scored two, and an RBI single from Drew Knecht extended the lead to 3-1. 
  • In the same inning, an error allowed Collin Callahan to score, making it 4-1. 
  • Despite Dubuque narrowing the lead to two with a single run, Carthage surged ahead with an RBI triple from Callahan and an error, resulting in a four-run advantage. 
  • Dubuque rallied with four runs in the eighth, taking control and winning the game 8-6. 
  • Although an RBI single from Krekling scored Gaca, Carthage fell short, with Dubuque securing the 8-7 victory.

High Flyers
  • Bryce Schaum picked up his first win of the season during game one, striking out 12 batters over 6.1 innings pitched. 
  • P.J. Moser and Drew Knecht had a batting average of .333 during the season's first three games, each hitting four hits, while Moser had three doubles. 
  • Collin Callahan had four hits, including two doubles for Carthage. Callahan also swiped two bases. 
  • Ryan Scanlon pitched 5.2 innings of work, striking out nine with an ERA of 1.59 against Dubuque.

  • Carthage will be in Arizona for an eight-game stint starting March 3-11.
