Men's Tennis Defeats Coe and UW-La Crosse

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Carthage men's tennis team competed in back-to-back duals on Saturday. The Firebirds opened the day with an 8-1 win over Coe, before earning another 8-1 victory over UW-La Crosse.

The Firebirds opened up the day against the Coe Kohawks. In doubles play, the Kohawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Ivan Burt-Smith and Jumpei Kasai defeated Elios Briand and Myles Krzewinski 8-5. Cooper Ferruzzi and Francisco Silveira evened the score with a commanding 8-1 win over Graham Peterson and Luke Doig. Diego Silva and Luca Okino earned a tight 8-7 (7-5) victory over Bryton Short and Grant Idoux to give the Firebirds a 2-1 lead.

In singles play, Silveira earned a 6-1, 7-5 win over Peterson. Krzewinski bounced back from doubles play and defeated Burt-Smith 6-1, 6-4. Briand got the win over Idoux with a 6-0, 6-3 performance. Silva came out of a battle victorious against Short, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Ferruzzi defeated Palomar with a pair of 6-3 victories. Okino defeated Kasai with a pair of 6-4 wins.

The Firebirds then competed against the UW-La Crosse Eagles. In doubles play, Briand and Krzewinski defeated Cole Contardi and Jack Hehli 8-4. Silveira and Ferruzzi swept Brady Horstmann and Alex Aranda 8-0. Marco Czosnyka and Daniel Jaworski earned an 8-3 victory over Luke Hinchcliffe and Nathan Jose to give the Firebirds a 3-0 lead heading into singles matches.

In singles play, Krzewinski defeated Contardi 3-6, 6-4, (10-6). Silva cruised past Horstmann with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Victor Pimenta earned the win over Hehli with a pair of 6-1 victories. Cyriac Cayuela defeated Aranda 6-4, 6-4. Okino fell to Hinchcliffe 2-6, 6-1, (10-7). Miles Whelan swept Jose 6-0, 6-0 to close out the victory for the Firebirds.

The Firebirds (5-0) will travel to Lake Geneva, Wis. on Friday, Feb. 16 for a rematch against UW-Whitewater at 6 p.m. Carthage men's tennis will return home on Feb. 23 to face Illinois Tech. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
