Firebirds Stun No. 24 UW-Whitewater

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage men's tennis team hosted the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks at Smeds Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon. The Warhawks came into the dual ranked no. 24 in NCAA Division III, but the Firebirds proved that a ranking is just a number as they defeated the Warhawks in commanding fashion. The win marks the program's first victory over the Warhawks since 2007.

How it Happened 
 
In doubles play, Myles Krzewinski and Elios Briand earned the win with an 8-6 victory for the Firebirds. Victor Pimenta and Cyriac Cayuela earned an 8-5 win. Marco Czosnyka and Daniel Jaworski earned the third win of the day for the Firebirds in a tight battle, defeating the Warhawks 8-7 (8-6). 

The Warhawks would win a pair of points in doubles, giving the Firebirds a 3-2 advantage heading into singles play.

In singles competition, Francisco Silveira won 5-0 RET over Luke Vandonslear. Krzewinski defeated Tyler Nelson 6-0, 6-4. Briand bested Will Ulrich 6-2, 6-3. Cooper Ferruzzi defeated Andrew Dumbauld 3-6, 6-5 RET. Diego Silva earned the comeback win over Jordan Oaks 3-6, 6-1, (10-5). Pimenta defeated Chase Lindwall 6-2, 6-3. Cayuela defeated Josh Baldwin 7-6 (5), 7-5, (10-8). Czosnyka earned the win over Josh Guillermo 6-1, 6-7 (6), (10-5). 

The Warhawks would take two matches in singles play to earn two points for the team score.

Coach's Remarks

"I am very proud of the way our guys competed today," said Head Coach Brady Lindsley. "We played a very good team tonight and our kids did not back down to the challenge. I am proud of all of them and want them to enjoy this win."
