WHEATON, Ill. – The Carthage women's tennis team hit the road Saturday for another CCIW match against the Wheaton Thunder. The Thunder controlled the momentum for most of the day, and the Firebirds came away with a tough 8-1 defeat.

 
 
In singles competition, Marie Weis fell to Madeline Gentry 6-0, 6-1. Luana da Silva was defeated by Audrey Vicks 6-0, 6-1. Wheaton's Alexandra Wachs used a pair of 6-1 victories to best Carthage's Sasha Manojlovic. Giovanna Mendes fell to Lydia Adams 6-1, 6-2. Maddie Kearney earned the lone point for the Firebirds in the match, defeating Janet Kondo with a pair of 6-3 victories. Victoria Rizzo rounded out singles play with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 loss to Delaney Canning.

In doubles play, Manojlovic and Weis fell 8-3 to Adams and Gentry. Mendes and da Silva came up short in their match with an 8-4 defeat to Kondo and Vick. Kearney and Beatriz Ferreira were defeated 8-3 by Wachs and Tatum Thurstone.


 
The Firebirds return to action on Friday, Sept. 22 as they compete at the ITA Regional in Whitewater, Wis. Action is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
