Baseball Begins Season in Florida

LAKE MYRTLE, FLA.  — The Carthage College baseball team began their season going 2-2 in Florida Friday through Sunday, defeating Albion and Anna Maria 14-9 and 8-5, respectively.

How it Happened
  • After Albion got on the board first with three in the first, a groundout from Drew Knecht was deep enough to score Matt Felber cutting the lead to two. 
  • An Albion throwing error scored Cody Tostrud shrinking the deficit to one in the third inning.  
  • Tostrud belted a three-run homerun flipping the score to 5-3 in the fourth. 
  • Joe Zuleger added a two-run home run in the same inning, which put the Firebirds ahead by four. 
  • Albion got a run back in the bottom half-inning; however, a sac fly from Knecht scored Jake Fulton. 
  • Albion rallied, tying it at eight in the fifth and sixth innings until Carthage regained the lead in the seventh, started by a two-run single from Kody Krekling. 
  • Another two-run single to left center from P.J. Moser made it 12-8. 
  • After Albion got a run in the bottom of the seventh, Carthage tacked on two in the eighth to hold on to win 14-9. 
 
  • In the second game in Florida, Anna Maria went ahead 3-0 through the first three innings. 
  • A wild pitch allowed Collin Callahan to score, narrowing the gap to two. 
  • Another run for Anna Maria in the fifth moved the score to 4-1. '
  • In the seventh, an RBI single from Callahan and an RBI groundout from Caruso tied it at four. 
  • An RBI double from AJ Gaca in the eighth scored Tostrud, then in the ninth, Carthage scored three, capped off by a sac fly from Evan Devine. 
  • Though Anna Maria tallied a single run in the ninth, the Firebirds won 8-5. 
 
  • On Saturday, Grove City got on the board first, scoring two in the third. 
  • Another run for Grove City in the seventh made it 3-0. 
  • Felber scored on a passed ball in the bottom half inning as Logan Grimm crossed home plate on a single from Tostrud. 
  • Grove City added two in the eighth to win 5-2. 
 
  • In the final game in Flordia, Fitchburg State took a 5-0 lead to the bottom of the second inning. 
  • Carthage go runs from a wild pitch and a fielding error shrinking the lead to 5-3. 
  • In the fourth, a flyout from Callahan allowed Evan Lapsley to cross home plate. 
  • In the fifth, two RBI singles from Ethan Engelfried and Knecht gave Carthage control of the game 6-5. 
  • Fitchburg State tacked on runs in the fourth and ninth to win 10-6.  

High Flyers
  • Through the first four games of play, Cody Tostrud had seven hits, one home run, and six runs batted in. 
  • Drew Knecht had a .385 batting average with five hits, one triple, and four runs batted in. 
  • Sophomore Collin Callahan had six hits for a .375 batting average. 
  • On the mound for the Firebirds, Bryce Schaum pitched 6.1 innings of work, only allowing four hits, and struck out three through two appearances. 
  • Jake Hartman Jr. struck out four against Fitchburg State over two innings. 
  • Brendan Roberts picked up his first save of the season, pitching 1.2 innings, and had one strikeout. 
  • Chance Carruthers pitched three innings in the season opener, striking out four for his first win. 

Team Results
  • Carthage travels to Arizona for a nine-game stint taking on Gustavus Adolphus first on Saturday, March 11.
